Statement on the Inglewood Police ending the Internal Investigation of the Marquintan Sandlin and Kisha Michael Matter

June 12, 2017

My condolences and sympathy are extended to the families of Marquintan Sandlin and Kisha Michael in recognition of the loss of their loved ones.

Last week a statement was issued by my office that did not take into consideration that the officers involved in the incident were immediately placed on leave and never returned to work. It also did not acknowledge the Mayor’s press conference within days of the February 2016 tragedy where he gave a synopsis of what was known about the shooting at the time.

The City of Inglewood released information about the incident that is releasable under State law with consideration for the ongoing investigation by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.  Further, there is ongoing litigation that will allow the sharing of certain information with the families’ attorneys through the process of discovery.

The Inglewood Police Department under Police Chief Mark Fronterotta has developed a strong bond of trust with Inglewood residents, which I greatly appreciate.  The City is experiencing its 6th consecutive year of the lowest per capita crime rates in recorded history.  Chief Fronterotta has made a point at all public meetings to announce job openings (both civilian and sworn) and to recruit from our community.

This incident is not a reflection of the department or its people. This was an isolated, tragic incident. I also appreciate that corrective action was taken swiftly.

Inglewood, under the leadership of Mayor James Butts, has blossomed economically and consequently increased employment opportunities for local residents resulting in a historically low unemployment rate for residents.
I have also learned that the Mayor personally, and both of the Inglewood Police Officer and Management Associations quietly contributed several thousands of dollars to the final services of Marquintan Sandlin and Kisha Michaels after learning that assistance was needed.  I applaud the compassion of the City in responding to this tragic loss of life.

We must continue to build bridges in our communities.  Working together, we can minimize situations and consequently, tragic outcomes.
