Saturday, August 13 2022

Senator Steven Bradford hosted a Back to School Resource Fair and School Supply Giveaway and distributed over 650 backpacks stuffed with vital school supplies to students returning to school this year. The Senator’s Back to School Resource Fair, held at California State University, Dominguez Hills’ beautiful campus also featured over 30 vendors and was made possible by charitable donations from a wide variety of sponsors.

“Education is one of the most powerful tools for progress that a society has,” said Senator Bradford. “But success in school takes more than attendance and study. Students need to be healthy and come prepared with the right resources to succeed. Something as simple as a backpack to hold textbooks and notes can make all the difference. Today’s success is due to the support of our many generous sponsors, dedicated resource vendors and hard-working volunteers.”

The event also featured a multitude of booths offering services, resources and giveaways such as housing assistance from the Housing Rights Center, health screenings and immunizations by St. John’s Community Health Clinic, dental screenings and vision care, as well as Covid-19 testing and vaccinations by the LA County Department of Health, SeraCollection Research Services, LLC, fresh produce, haircuts, hair braiding and lunch.

The event was sponsored by many organizations including, Cal Water, Watson Land Company, Marathon Refinery, Hawaiian Gardens Casino, Google, Waste Resources, Los Angeles World Airports, Charter Communications (Spectrum), SpaceX, Western States Petroleum Association, Cypress Creek Renewables, and the Intuit Dome (LA Clippers).

“Our university strives to be not only in the community, but of the community,” said CSUDH President Thomas A. Parham. “We are delighted to partner with Sen. Bradford to help deliver much-needed school supplies and resources to underserved children in our region. Closing the equity gap is a vital and necessary step in creating a truly equitable society, and efforts such as this illustrate how government and higher education can come together to positively impact the South Bay community.”

“Every student deserves to return to school healthy and with everything they need to learn,” continued Bradford. “The School Resource Fair is something I started during my time in the Assembly and I’m happy to be able to continue it as a Senator. I’d like to extend thanks to everyone who came through and to my alma mater CSU Dominguez Hills for hosting us.”
