Men's Empowerment Summit [1]
On Saturday, September 23rd, Senator Steven Bradford was extremely pleased to partner with radio station 102.3 KJLH and California State University Dominguez Hills for the inaugural “MEN’S EMPOWERMENT SUMMIT”. While CSUDH graduates more African American students than all other universities in California, it should be noted that young women make up over 70% of the student body. In recognition of this disparity and the fact that there are many other issues confronting the young men of the 35th Senate District and beyond, Senator Bradford felt it necessary to work collaboratively to provide an opportunity for alliance and fellowship to help these men access resources and become more empowered themselves.
As the former Chairman of the Select Committee on Boys and Men of Color in the California State Assembly, Senator Bradford recognized the need for a focused effort to address the plethora of impediments challenging our males’ needs, the Empowerment Summit focused on several important issues including: health & wellness, financial literacy, employment, veterans affairs, mentorship, spirituality, entrepreneurship, and criminal justice reform. Information, resources and inspirational messages were freely given to those in attendance. In fact, men from all over the greater Los Angeles community spent their Saturday in breakout sessions to help them learn to navigate the subjects they are confronted with daily while trying to get ahead. This inaugural event was by all means successful in building meaningful relationships and foundations for future growth. Senator Bradford is already looking forward to next year’s 2nd Annual “EMPOWERMENT SUMMIT”, date yet to be determined.
