George Castro in Gardena community acknowledged with Statewide Small Business Award [1]
George Castro has been a fixture in our community of Gardena providing some of the highest quality photography the region has to offer at Castro Photography Studios.
In July 1962, George entered and won a photo competition and won 1st place with a photo of a model. Laid off from his job at Douglas Air Craft, the same year George went into photography full time.
In those years photography was still shots and 16mm.
The first 6 or 7 years 85% of his assignments were models, Beauty pageants, Hollywood premiers, and the Academy Awards. He was the official photographer for California World Pageant and the International Beauty Congress. At the same time he worked to establish a commercial studio in Gardena and in 1964 Castro Studios was a reality.
George and his wife Edyth raised 5 daughters, Cheri, Toni, Christina, Theresa and Barbara.
They all worked hard at making Castro Studios a fine photography business. After finishing high school, Barbara went on to college taking photo journalism, and has been in the business ever since. George, Barbara, and the whole family have successfully been operating for well over 45 years.
