Important Deadline for SSI and Veterans Affairs Compensation Tomorrow is the deadline for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Veterans Affairs Compensation and Pension (VA) beneficiaries who have a dependent child under age 17 to enter information on the IRS website in order to receive $500 per eligible child in stimulus funds. This May 5, 2020 deadline applies to non-filers, who receive VA or SSI benefits and did not file a 2018 or 2019 tax return. Those who fill out the form will have their children's stimulus funds added to the $1,200 individual stimulus check they will receive this year from the federal government. VA and SSI non-filers who miss this deadlines, still may receive the $500 per child stimulus, but it will be incorporated into their 2020 tax returns, and will not be available until next year. Non-filers who do not have dependent children do not need to fill out the form in order to receive their stimulus checks. Click here to access the special Non-Filers tool on IRS.gov. Reopening California Governor Newsom announced today that some retail stores across the state will be able to be reopened with some modified practices as early as this Friday. Under what the Governor calls "Stage 2" of his state-wide guideline, bookstores, music stores, toy stores, flower shops, sporting good retailers and others will begin to reopen for pickup purchases. Based on the state's progress in meeting metrics tied to indicators, the state can begin to move into Stage 2 of modifying the stay at home order this Friday, May 8th, with guidelines being released Thursday, May 7th. Local governments will play a major role in the decision for how quickly to open up. This will allow some communities the flexibility to move faster than others and open more businesses based on their own status rather than be forced to follow one speed. California Department of Public Health Director Sonia Angell said the state is ready to relax some stay-at-home restrictions in part because coronavirus-related hospitalizations had stabilized and because the state had expanded its capacity to handle another potential surge of cases. The Governor released a Report Card showing how the state has made progress in fighting COVID-19 in a number of categories such as stabilized hospitalization and ICU numbers and acquiring PPE.
