Dear Friends, Today marks the beginning of Black History Month, a time when we recognize, honor and pay tribute to the journey and achievements of African Americans who have contributed to the greatness of our nation. We must acknowledge that Black History is American History. During Black History Month, all Americans must know and remember that African Americans have made and are making great contributions. This country benefits from the resilience and sacrifices made by a community that historically has been relegated to the sidelines of society. Our history of the United States is rich with inspirational stories of noble men and women whose actions, words, and achievements have contributed to the success and prosperity of our country. From the earliest days, United States history has been greatly influenced by African American heroes and pioneers in ways that go far beyond slavery and fighting for our freedom. These contributions include extraordinary discoveries in science, medicine, business, education, government, industry, sports, entertainment and social leadership. Black History Month is also a reminder of the tremendous work that lies ahead. As the Vice Chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus and a Member of state's Reparations Task Force, I will continue doing all I can to promote equity and justice as well as amplify the often unheard voices of my brothers and sisters. By the end of June, the Reparations Task Force will issue its final report with recommendation on how California can acknowledge and repair the causes and consequences of inequalities of racial injustice and repay the debt it owes to African Americans for years of discrimination, oppression and injustice. I look forward to celebrating our achievements with you during Black History Month. Best, Senator Steven Bradford |
