Senator Bradford issues statement on funding for reparations in State Budget

SACRAMENTO – Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena) issued the following statement on the 3-party state budget agreement that includes initial funding for reparations:

“Although we wanted more, I'm deeply appreciative of the $12 million in the state budget for reparations. Even in these tough fiscal times, this funding is a clear reflection of our priorities and values as a state.  This money will start to stand up the infrastructure to pay for future reparations. We, as the California Legislative Black Caucus, made the case that the harms of slavery and racist public policies aren’t healed. They still exist today and impact Black Californians and Black Americans. We see it all around us in lower home ownership rates, educational achievement, health disparities, and a significant wealth gap.  I look forward to working with our Legislative leaders and the Governor to implement reparations. We often say that if something isn't in the budget, then it doesn't matter or even exist. This clearly states the reparations do matter and will be a priority in California going forward. This is just the beginning."

SACRAMENTO – El Senador Steve Bradford (D-Gardena) emitió la siguiente declaración sobre el acuerdo del presupuesto estatal tripartito que incluye financiamiento inicial para reparaciones:

“Aunque queríamos más, aprecio profundamente los $12 millones del presupuesto estatal para corregir los daños. Incluso en estos tiempos fiscales difíciles, este financiamiento es un reflejo claro de nuestras prioridades y valores como estado.  Este dinero empezará a levantar la infraestructura para pagar futuras reparaciones. Nosotros, como Bancada Legislativa Afroamericana de California, defendimos que los daños de la esclavitud y las políticas públicas racistas no se curan. Todavía existen hoy y afectan a los afroamericanos californianos y estadounidenses. Lo vemos a nuestro alrededor en tasas más bajas de propiedad de viviendas, logros educativos, disparidades en salud y una brecha de riqueza significativa.  Espero trabajar con nuestros líderes legislativos y el Gobernador para implementar las reparaciones. A menudo decimos que, si algo no está en el presupuesto, entonces no importa o ni siquiera existe. Esto establece claramente que las reparaciones sí importan y serán una prioridad en California en el futuro. Esto es solo el comienzo".
