September is Suicide Prevention Month

Dear Friends,
September marks Suicide Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness, foster compassion, and take action to save lives. If you or someone you care about is struggling with thoughts of self-harm or suicide, please don’t wait. Dial 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, where trained professionals are available 24/7 to listen, support, and guide you toward help. You are not alone, and there is hope.
The statistics are sobering:
- In California, the suicide rate stands at approximately 10.5 deaths per 100,000 people.
- Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth and young adults aged 10 to 34.
- Men in California are four times more likely to die by suicide than women.
- Across the United States, firearms account for over 50% of suicide deaths, a trend mirrored in our state.
These numbers reflect lives lost, families shattered, and communities forever changed. But together, we can make a difference.
Here’s how you can help:
- Save and share 988 in your phone and encourage loved ones to do the same.
- Secure firearms and medications using lockboxes and safety devices to reduce access during moments of crisis.
- Check in regularly with friends, family, and neighbors—especially those facing depression, anxiety, or emotional distress.
- Start the conversation. Talk openly about mental health, feelings, and the warning signs of suicide. Silence can be deadly—compassionate dialogue can be life-saving.
- Seek professional help early. Therapy, counseling, and medical support are powerful tools for healing.
The California Department of Health and Human Services offers a wide range of suicide prevention resources for children, parents, and adults. I encourage you to visit their website and explore the support available, it could save a life.
As always, my office is here to assist with any state-related concerns. Please don’t hesitate to reach out at (310) 217-4728.
With care and commitment,
Senator Laura Richardson
Assistant Majority Whip
