Senator Steven Bradford Issues Statement on Committee on Revision of the Penal Code’s First Annual Report

SACRAMENTO – This morning, Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena) issued this statement in response to the Committee on Revision of the Penal Code publishing its first annual report. The Committee was created on January 1, 2020 to study the California Penal Code and recommend statutory reforms. The Committee’s report includes several recommendations to reform California’s criminal justice system.

“I commend the members of the Committee on Revision of the Penal Code for their diligent work in examining our state’s criminal laws and justice system. In the past year, Californians have rallied and advocated for systemic criminal justice reform and have repeatedly rejected tough-on-crime measures at the ballot box. California must be a leader in criminal justice reform that will keep our communities safe and addresses the impacts that mass incarceration and ineffective policing have taken on poor communities of color. As Chair of the Senate Committee on Public Safety, I look forward to working with my colleagues and stakeholders on these recommendations.”
