Sen. Bradford issues statement on release of the 2022 Racial and Identity Profiling Act (RIPA) Report

January 03, 2024

SACRAMENTO - Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena) issued the following statement following the release of the 2022 Racial and Identity Profiling Act (RIPA) report:

“The 2022 data from the Racial and Identity Profiling Act (RIPA) continues to show that Californians of color are disproportionately subjected to discriminatory police traffic stops— and too often lead to deadly outcomes for people of color. These stops are used as a pretext to conduct more intensive questioning and often to gain consent to conduct a search of the vehicle.

“My legislation, SB 50, will strike an appropriate balance by limiting traffic stops for non-safety issues like expired registration tags while maintaining law enforcement's ability to stop unsafe vehicles and make stops with probable cause. We must pass SB 50 to create greater justice for drivers and end this kind of blatant discrimination.”
