Senator Bradford’s historic reparations legislation among bills passing Assembly Appropriations Committee
SACRAMENTO – Senator Steven Bradford’s landmark legislation to implement reparations in California has passed the Assembly Appropriations Committee and will be voted on by the full Assembly later this month.
- SB 1403 serves as the foundation that would create the California American Freedmen Affairs Agency to administer all future reparations.
- SB 1050 provides a pathway to restitution for Californians who lost homes or had their land taken without fair compensation as a result of the racially-motivated use of eminent domain.
- SB 1331 establishes an account in the state treasury for the purpose of funding reparations policies approved by the Legislature and the Governor.
“Today’s vote brings us one step closer to placing these historic bills on Governor Newsom’s desk for his signature,” Senator Bradford said. “It’s clear to most Californians that the harmful impact of slavery and institutional discrimination on African Americans in California can still be felt today. These three bills are critically important for setting up the framework for reparations and correcting a historic wrong.”
