Senator Bradford’s Back to School Resource Fair and Backpack Giveaway prepares students for school year success

COMPTON – On Saturday, August 10, Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena) hosted his annual Back to School Resource Fair and Backpack Giveaway at Compton College. The event distributed more than 1,400 backpacks filled with essential school supplies to local students.

"Education is one of the most powerful tools for progress that a society has,” Senator Bradford said. “But success in school requires more than just attendance and study. Students need to be healthy and equipped with the right resources to thrive. The success of this event is due to the overwhelming support of our generous partners, dedicated resource providers, and hardworking volunteers.”

Students and their families could utilize a wide range of resources and services. This year’s event focused special attention on mental health. “The A is For Audacity” organization provided a mental health workshop to teach children mindfulness and meditation techniques along with distributing journals tailored to different grade levels. Additionally, McDonald’s of Southern California generously donated 500 Happy Meals for lunch.

In collaboration with Adidas, OneLegacy, Gellert Global Group and many of our partners, the event helped ensure students would be prepared for the school year. Southern California Edison’s Mobile Education Unit, UCLA Pediatric Dentistry, Vision to Learn, California Highway Patrol, The Home Depot, Intuit Dome, KJLH, LA County Library, and many other organizations provided valuable resources and services. LA Trade Technical College (LATTC) also offered free haircuts and braiding services so students would look and feel their best as they return to school.

“We are delighted to partner with Senator Bradford to deliver much-needed school supplies and resources to our students,” said Dr. Keith Curry, President of Compton College. “Our commitment to the community is strong, and events like this exemplify how we can work together to create a positive impact.”

The event was further supported by the Department of Public Social Services, LA County Department of Mental Health, MLK Hospital and Outpatient Center, WIC, Planned Parenthood Los Angeles, State Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, and Walgreens.
